For those of you who appreciate a great wine but don't like Wine Spectator's 100 point rating system - how does one rate a wine 98 points that won't even be worth drinking until 2020 - here is a wine expert that relies on the old fashioned way of assessing a wine - drink it, break it down and tell us how it tasted. Dan Berger has been doing this forever. You have to pay for his newsletter but it is worth it. Here is a quote from today's newsletter:
One could argue, with justification,
that a gold medal for a wine and a
score of 96 on the same wine equate to
calling such a wine “great.” But once
you get past that equation, what have
you learned about the wine?
Is it acidic or flabby? Oaky or
unwooded? Citrusy, tropical, floral or
minerally?
Neither the score nor the number
tells you anything about the sort of
wine you’re likely to get.
Dan puts a lot of effort into his wine reviews and I have been following him for 3 or 4 years now. His recommendations, when I can find them, have never been a disappointment.
